We are excited to announce our Psychedelic collection of hand knotted wool and silk rugs for Christopher Farr! The collection is inspired by traditional floral patterns as seen through the lens of California counterculture. Poppies, Weed and Mushroom patterns provide a nuanced “punk” alternative to the traditional prettiness of classical Persian and European botanical motifs. A cannabis garland takes the place of a romantic, William Morris ivy border. Rich gem-tones in unexpected combinations take on the color saturation of silk-screen Fillmore rock posters. Giant technicolor poppies evoke a classic Jean-Michel Frank rug. A mushroom filled forest floor takes a kaleidoscopic trip. This collection is for the free thinkers, the artists, the poets, and the lovers. Thank you, Mother Nature.
Commune Design has always had a strong connection with Northern California and its arts and craft traditions. With that, it felt fitting to photograph the Psychedelic collection in the iconic hand-built home of the late artist J.B Blunk. Blunk’s sculptural home was built in the 1950’s on a foundation of alternative thinking. Today the property is recognized as a testament to Northern California’s Post War artistic community. The Blunk House is a celebration of craft as a way of life, a personal artistic expression through materiality, texture and color…everything we aim these rugs to be.
