The original Community Shop, 2008

Commune Shop started in 2008 in response to that year’s economic crisis.  Many design projects were put on hold or simply went away and many of our craftspeople were out of work.  We responded by commissioning decorative and functional items to offer to the public.  We erected a large tent in our studio and opened what we then called “Community Shop”, with a second outpost at the newly opened Ace in Palm Springs. People were eager to freshen their homes with the soulful work of these artisans.  In time, design projects and full scale renovations returned, the physical shops proved a distraction to maintain, so the tent came down, the shop in Palm Springs became a hotel gym, and we moved the operation online and renamed it Commune Shop.

For over 15 years we have consistently offered the work of hundreds of makers from the Commune family. Initially they were mostly from Los Angeles, but slowly as we designed projects in other locations and brought local talent into the fold that family has grown.  From California to New York to the UK, France, India and Japan…they come from all over the world, making things just for us that enhance people’s lives by being highly functional or simply beautiful or even delicious.

Commune Shop also includes artists we represent for significant commissions like Adam Pogue and Iris Delphine, as well as products we design in partnership with some of the greatest makers in the world:  Christopher Farr rugs and cloth, George Smith upholstered furniture, handwoven fabrics by Kufri, lighting and accessories from Remains, cement tiles from Exquisite Surfaces and dinnerware by Heath.

There is always something new at Commune Shop…we are committed to it…so please help us stay in touch by joining our mailing list here.
